Data and Account Recovery When a Loved One Dies

Data Recovery = retrieving information from a device

Account Recovery = regaining access to an online account

Devices: Computers, tablets, smartphones

Example 1: “We don’t want to know anything on his computer, we just want his contacts, so we can let his friends know that he died and details of the memorial service.”

Example 2: “Mom had all the family pictures. She took so many pictures! All we want is the pictures, then wipe it.”

Example 3: One time the family knew that the elderly gentleman had a will. He had talked about it. But they couldn’t find it anywhere in the house after he died. After I accessed his computer, I found an unofficial PDF copy, but more importantly, I learned that he had filed his will with a particular county records office.

Example 4: “Recover everything, no matter what.”

Example 5: “Just unlock it, and you’re done. We’ll take it from there.”

On site: I travel to your location and work on the devices under your oversight. The cost depends on how close you are to Seattle, Washington.

Remote: You ship me the devices and I do the data recovery. The success rate isn’t quite as high as with on site work. On site, I can search the owner’s office, living quarters, etc., and often find valuable information that may not be obvious.

Recommendation: Keep paying their cell phone bill until recovery is completed. If they have a smartwatch, keep it, too.

Criminal Investigations: I require a written request from law enforcement prior to beginning work if a crime has been committed, or is considered a possibility. Law enforcement officers will have specific procedures to follow.
